Word Counter
Count words, characters, sentences, paragraphs and estimated reading time as you paste text.
What this tool does
Measures the size and structure of any text: words, characters with and without spaces, sentences, paragraphs, lines, unique words, average and longest word, plus reading and speaking time.
Who should use it
Writers checking a brief, editors working to a length, students, and SEOs reviewing how much copy a page really contains.
How it works
Words are matched with a Unicode-aware pattern that keeps apostrophes and hyphens inside a word ("don't", "state-of-the-art"). Sentences are split on terminal punctuation followed by a capital letter or digit. Reading time divides the word count by 238 words per minute and speaking time by 130.
How to use it
- Enter or paste your text in the form.
- Use "Load example" if you want to see how input should look.
- Press the run button. Processing happens instantly in your browser.
- Review the result panel, then copy or download the output if the tool offers it. Use Reset to start over.
Practical example
Pasting "The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog." gives 9 words, 44 characters, 1 sentence and 8 unique words ("the" appears twice).
Understanding the results
Characters count Unicode code points, so emoji and accented letters count as one each. Unique words ignore capitalisation. Reading time is an average for adults reading silently, not a promise for your audience.
Limitations
Sentence detection is rule-based and can miscount abbreviations such as "e.g." or "Dr.". Word counts may differ by a few from other tools that treat hyphens or apostrophes differently.
Accuracy and report transparency
Results are computed in your browser from exactly what you enter. Deterministic steps (counting, parsing, encoding, validation) are verified by an automated test-suite with known answers. Where a method is a heuristic, the result panel says "estimated". No external data is used and nothing is invented.
Privacy
Your input never leaves your device for this tool. We count anonymous events (tool opened, run, copied) without storing what you typed. See the Privacy Policy.
Frequently asked questions
Does word count affect rankings?
Google has said there is no ideal length. Cover the topic completely for the reader; use the counter to check that a page is not accidentally thin or padded.
Is my data sent to your server?
No. This tool runs entirely in your browser, so the text or files you enter stay on your device. We do record anonymous counts of how often each tool is opened or run (no input data) to see which tools are useful.
How accurate are the results?
Counting, parsing, encoding and validation steps are deterministic and covered by automated tests with known answers. Anything based on a heuristic is labelled "estimated" in the result panel.
Is this tool really free?
Yes. There is no account, limit or paid plan. The site is supported by advertising, which is disclosed on our Advertising Disclosure page.
